Chain Terminators
What Is a Chain Terminator?
A chain terminator, also known as a chain termination regulator or molecular weight regulator, is a type of functional additive used during polymerization. Its primary function is to control the growth of polymer chains, thereby precisely regulating the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and stability of the polymerization process.
During free-radical polymerization, monomers form active free radicals under the action of an initiator. These free radicals continuously undergo addition reactions with monomers, causing the polymer chains to keep growing:
Initiation → Chain Propagation → Chain Transfer → Chain Termination
If the active free radicals are not controlled in time, excessive polymer-chain growth may occur, resulting in:
- Excessively high molecular weight
- Uneven molecular weight distribution
- Increased melt viscosity
- Reduced processing performance
- Lower batch-to-batch resin consistency
Chain terminators react with the active free radicals generated during polymerization and terminate the active polymer chains in advance. This effectively controls the polymerization process and improves the stability of polymer quality.
Chain terminators are currently widely used in PVC suspension polymerization, ABS polymerization, synthetic rubber production, and other free-radical polymerization systems.
Mechanism of Chain Terminators
Scavenging Active Free Radicals and Terminating Chain Growth
During free-radical polymerization, the ends of growing polymer chains usually contain highly active free radicals.
The hindered phenolic structure in a chain terminator can provide active hydrogen and react with the polymer-chain radicals.
Because the hindered phenolic structure provides strong steric protection and resonance stabilization, the resulting phenoxy radicals are unlikely to continue initiating polymerization reactions.
This helps to:
- Reduce the concentration of free radicals
- Prevent further chain growth
- Control the length of polymer chains
Regulating Polymer Molecular Weight and Molecular Weight Distribution
By controlling the polymerization reaction rate, chain terminators help polymers obtain a more balanced molecular structure.
The main effects include:
- Precisely controlling polymer molecular weight
- Optimizing molecular weight distribution
- Reducing the formation of ultra-high-molecular-weight components
- Improving resin flowability
- Enhancing processing stability
For PVC, molecular weight directly affects:
- K-value
- Melt rheological properties
- Plasticization rate
- Processing temperature
- Mechanical properties of finished products
Therefore, chain terminators are important processing additives in PVC polymerization.
Providing Antioxidant Protection
Modern chain terminators usually use hindered phenolic structures. In addition to controlling polymer-chain growth, they also provide antioxidant protection.
Their functions include:
- Scavenging oxidative free radicals
- Delaying the thermal-oxidative aging of polymers
- Reducing degradation during processing
- Improving long-term stability
Why Use an Aqueous Chain Terminator?
Leadstab AO 245DW is supplied as an aqueous dispersion rather than as a conventional dry antioxidant powder.
This form is suitable for PVC suspension polymerization, emulsion polymerization and other water-based processing systems.
Potential handling and processing benefits include:
- Convenient pumping and metering
- Uniform distribution in water-based systems
- Easier introduction into the polymerization process
- Reduced handling of fine antioxidant powder
- More consistent distribution of the active component
- Compatibility with aqueous dosing equipment
The actual dosing procedure should be determined according to the polymerization formulation, reactor design, mixing conditions and existing operating process.
